At Mine Shift, our Board of Directors is made up of leaders committed to creating a safer, more inclusive, and respectful mining industry. We are proud to spotlight Susan Lomas, P.Geo., President of Mine Shift and founder of the movement that grew into the organization we know today.
Professional Background
Susan is a Professional Geologist and President of Lions Gate Geological Consulting Inc. (LGGC), a consulting firm she has led since 2006. Throughout her career, she has specialized in creating three-dimensional models of ore deposits and estimating mineral resources for mining projects.
While her technical expertise and work ethic has shaped a successful geology business, Susan has also become a recognized advocate for safer and more respectful workplaces. She has dedicated significant time to understanding workplace harassment and empowering workers with practical tools to support one another. In addition to taking a year away from her consulting business to research workplace harassment, Susan has trained nearly 800 mining workers through Mine Shift's DIGGER Workshop, teaching bystander intervention and allyship strategies that help create safer work environments.
How Mine Shift Began
Susan founded the Me Too Mining Association in 2018 to start a conversation the mining industry could no longer ignore: sexual assault and harassment in the workplace. What began as a grassroots effort to raise awareness and support workers evolved into Mine Shift in 2023, broadening the organization's focus to include psychological safety, inclusion, respect, and workplace culture across the mining sector.

Susan's vision has been rooted in the belief that creating meaningful change requires both awareness and action. Through Mine Shift, she continues to help move conversations forward while equipping individuals and organizations with practical strategies to build safer workplaces.
Why This Work Matters
Susan believes it is essential that workers know what to do when they experience harassment or witness it happening to a coworker. Too often, people want to help but are unsure how to respond or where to turn for support.
She is working toward a mining industry where every worker feels empowered to take action, support colleagues, and contribute to a culture of accountability and respect. For Susan, creating safer workplaces starts with giving people the knowledge, confidence, and tools they need to intervene effectively and support one another.
Building Practical Skills for Safer Workplaces
Susan brings together technical expertise, research, advocacy, and education to advance psychological safety across the mining industry. Through Mine Shift's DIGGER Workshop, she teaches practical bystander intervention and allyship skills that help workers recognize harmful behaviours, support colleagues, and contribute to more respectful workplace cultures.

Sue has used the email address geowitch since 1994, and according to her, no one ever forgets it.
Before launching her career in geology, she also spent three summers tree planting while attending university.
