A look inside the DIGGER Training Program
Workplace Culture
Bystander intervention strategies have the power to bring about significant positive changes in the challenging workplace culture of the mining industry. By embracing these strategies, worksites can be transformed into safe, inclusive, and respectful environments for all workers.
Bystanders
In any given situation, there are three distinct types of bystanders: passive, complicit, and active. In our workshop, we delve into effective strategies to overcome inhibitors that may prevent individuals from engaging in situations and taking decisive action.
Practice
Our workshop incorporates hands-on exercises from the DIGGER Program, where participants get to collaborate in groups and engage with various scenarios that highlight different types of inappropriate workplace behaviours.
Working collectively, each group analyzes the effects on the target, harasser, co-workers, and the company itself. They actively explore DIGGER-based strategies to effectively address the behaviours depicted in the scenarios.
At the end of the workshop, groups present their assessments of the scenarios, sparking conversations on topics that may have previously gone unexplored within the team.
Harassment Impact
During the workshop, participants will acquire the skills to identify inappropriate workplace behaviors and gain a comprehensive understanding of their impacts on colleagues and the overall work environment. Engaging discussions will cover topics such as sexual assault, sexual harassment, bullying, racism, and various forms of bias.
DIGGER Toolkit
Participants gain valuable insights into Bystander Intervention strategies through the renowned DIGGER program by Mine Shift.
DIGGER is specifically designed to offer practical guidance on taking appropriate actions while prioritizing safety considerations. During the workshop, attendees discover that responding verbally to a harasser in the heat of the moment is not always necessary. They learn about alternative, effective, and impactful actions that an active bystander can employ.
"MERC is a research institution that provides education and training to the next generation of industry leaders in mineral exploration. During our safety training week, before students and researchers head to the field, we engaged Susan and Julia (Mine Shift) to educate our researchers on harassment in the Exploration and Mining industry and to provide tools that will empower workers to intervene when behaviour is inappropriate. With this knowledge and tools, our graduates will create work environments which are respectful and safe."
